  • Rummy is one of the most popular card games, which is referred by names like Straight Rummy, Basic Rummy, Traditional Rummy, Standard Rummy etc. Rummy is a high octane poker game which involves all the necessary ingredients. Rummy game does not involve any official rules. Rules which are said below show the exact play of the game

    Deck & Players

Rummy can be started with 2-6 players. This game is started with standard 52 card deck. This game begins with estimation of a target score. Player is declared as winner if he reaches that target score. 100 points is the default score to which a player has to reach. The Deal In this deal, the dealer is chosen at random. Most of the times, the dealer is the person who takes the lowest card from the pack of cards. Number of cards dealt by the players is independent of the number of players playing the game.

Number of players Number of cards dealt
    2 Players 10 cards each
    3 or 4 Players 7 cards each
    5 or 6 Players 6 cards each

The deal alternates if after each game, there are only two players. When there are more than two players then the deal moves in clockwise direction i.e. to left around the table. Dealer starts with the player to his left and deals each player one card at a time. This continues until each player has required number of cards. Other cards which are left are put face down on the table by the dealer. Now the dealer picks up the top card on the table and puts it face up. This card is placed to the right of the stock, to start discard of pile. When all cards are dealt, then player start sorting their cards. First turn is taken by the player who is to the left of the dealer.

    Objective of the Game

Draw (Compulsory) - Here each player begins his turn either by drawing a card from the top of the pile or by taking the top card from the discarded pile. This procedure is called as “Draw” or “Drawing”. If a player draws a card from the stock, then he need not show his hand to opponents. If a player draws a card from the discard pile then his opponents will come to know the card he is having: this is because the card is put face up on the table. The objective of the game is to dispose all players’ cards. These three cards can be discarded in three ways:

    (1) Melding (Optional) - )- Few cards can be discarded by the player, by placing approved combinations of 3 or more cards from his hand (with their face up) on the table. There are some other alternatives for players, they can choose to keep melds in their hands for strategic reasons or they can take chance to declare the “Rummy” at a later stage for gaining a bonus. Melds can also be laid down by players during the turn. There are mainly two types of combinations: sets and runs.

A run is a sequence which consists of three or more cards of same suit

A setis a sequence which consists of three or more cards of different suit but of same rank.

    (2) Laying Off (Optional) -This is nothing but adding cards from players hands to melds placed on the tab This is nothing but adding cards from players hands to melds placed on the table. Here cards must be added from the meld. For example if there is a run which involves 4 5 6 on the table then a player can add 2 or 3 and also 7 on to the table. Here player is not permitted to move cards from one meld to another meld. Here players should not lay any cards because there is no limit for laying the cards.

    (3) Discarding (Compulsory) - In this place player places a card from his hand on the discard pile. Each player here should end his turn by discarding one card from his hand. Once player has discarded his turn is said to be over and he should not play cards again. One important rule here is “ if a player has drawn card from the discard pile then he should not discard the same card again in the turn”.

In a single turn each player should draw a card. He/she has an option of placing a meld on the table or laying off cards to an existing meld.

What if the stock pile runs out?

Most of the times the stock pile runs out, here the top card from the discard pile is kept aside and the other cards are shuffled and are kept face down. Players who have valued cards in their hand need not discard the cards.

    Ending the Hand

A player wins the hand if he is able to play every thing before his co-players i.e. he should discard, meld of layoff cards before his co-players.

    Point Scoring

At end of each hand., each player adds all the points the cards remaining in his hand as follows:

Here faces (King, Queen, Jack) are worth 10 points each. Number cards are worth of their pip value. For example: 5 is worth of five points and 8 is worth of eight points. In this game Aces take low value and are worth 1 point each. Aces value depends on few houses, some of them claim that they give 15 points for Aces.Ranks of these cards are in this order: Aces 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Jack Queen King. Total values of all cards remaining in player’s hands are added to the winner’s hand. The game continues further until the players reach the highest hand.

    Going Out & Going Rummy

Player “goes out” when he gets rid of all his cards. If all cards of player are melded then he can lay them down without discarding a card to end his last turn. A player “goes Rummy” when he disposes all his cards in one turn and goes out without any previous put down cards

A player "goes Rummy" when he disposes of all the cards in his hand in one turn and goes out without previously having put down or laid off any cards. When this happens, every other player earns him twice the amount of points they would ordinarily owe. Some house rules may provide a 10 point bonus and not a doubling of points owed.
